Dadra Nagar Haveli

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is one of the three districts of newly formed UT of Daman Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli.
This district is a inseparable part of India and is situated in its western parts but still is unknown to many people in our country. This blog will tell you some amazing as well as interesting facts about Dadra Nagar Haveli in a nutshell.

1. It wasn't free even when the whole country was..!!
Yes you read right, DNH didn't get independence on 15th August 1947 instead it was ruled by the Portuguese till 1954. On 2nd August 1954, DNH was liberated from the Portuguese rule and hence every year 2nd August is celebrated as 'Liberation Day' of DNH.

2. Even after independence, DNH was not a part of India.
As you read above, DNH was liberated in 1954, but one fact is that it was not merged in the Indian Union till 1961. It was administered as an absolutely free state of  'Free Dadra Nagar Haveli'. And it was ruled by Varishta Panchayat. But the International Court of Justice recognized it as a Portuguese property. Later in 1961 it was merged into the Indian Union.

3.Mixed Geography...
A section of DNH is surrounded by the rocky and hilly Sahyadri Mountains which regulate the weather here. DNH also has a river flowing through it and thus it has fertile alluvial plains suitable for agriculture. The geography and climate makes it one of the best places to live in the region.

4. DNH the Cherrapunji of the west..??
Did you know DNH experiences a whooping  2169 mm of rainfall every year and hence it is sometimes referred to as Cherrapunji of the west. The rainfall not only helps the natural vegetation to develop but also creates some scenic spots which become a must visit for a weekend trip.

5. DNH loves nature....
The territory of DNH is also famous for its flora and fauna.Development of DNH goes hand in hand with the nature. You'll be amazed after reading that even after the industries were setup, the forest cover of DNH is more than 42%. DNH also has a wildlife sanctuary which covers nearly 19% of its area and provides habitat to several species of birds and animals. This becomes a hotspot for nature lovers.River Daman Ganga also remains clean throughout DNH.

6.Awesome Local Culture...

One can find many tribes in the rural areas of DNH. All the tribes have different culture and some speak different languages. They express their rich culture through various art forms which include folk dances, folk songs, etc. The Tarpa dance of this region is very famous.

7.In Dus Trees....

Along with nature, DNH also contributes to the country's GDP through industrial and agricultural production.Earliest industries came up in DNH in 1965 and now there are more than 2900 units producing a variety of goods and services. The industries in DNH provide employment to more than 1 lakh 30 thousand people from all parts of the country.

 8.Tour-i-sm....
I consider DNH is underrated in terms of tourism. People often ignore DNH while making plans for their trips. But they forget that this place has everything, from calm lake Dudhani where you can relax to the Lion Safari in Vasona where you can experience the roar of tawny beasts. It also has riverfront and beautiful gardens where you can spend evenings and Museum that tells you about the history of the territory. And a lot of spots more.!!!
